The islamitic middelbare school Ibn Ghaldoun in Rotterdam refuses to pay
back the million euros which staatssecretaris van Bijsterveldt
(Onderwijs) [education] reclaims from the school.
'We will not pay back the amount. I will not give anything back, for nothing
has been spent. We shall fight this case through all court instances', says
an enraged school chairman Naas.
Van Bijsterveldt claims the money - which was determined for lessons - back,
because it was spent for many side activities. For example, pupils, parents
and staff went on a trip to the holy sites in Saudi Arabia, busses were
bought for transporting the pupils, and two imams were paid a salary who
were part of the school staff on paper only.
The onderwijsinspectie could not prove that cheating had been done, but does
state that everything is wrong at the school. Next to the incorrect spending
of the money, it seems that the school gives its pupils much too good grades
and helps family members of [school] administration members to get jobs.
