Actually, life is quite abundant and diverse in Antarctica.

It just that Antarctica being a rather difficult place to get to and to
conduct scientific studies in, a lot of the species have so far escaped
scientific discovery and description.
Once upon a time, folks were doing well to get to the south pole at all,
much less undertake extended scientific studies or search for new species.
Used to be, it was pull in, plant a flag, take a couple of pictures, and
get the hell out of there before the weather sets in and everybody ends
up like Scott.
Now that folks have the ability and the resources to conduct more
intense studies and more lengthy exploration, all sorts of heretofore
undiscovered critters are turning up right regular like.
Peace and justice,
