Byrd has lied about his Klan membership (claimed his involvement with
the Klan was much shorter than it actually was, as evidenced by
letters written by Byrd years after he claimed to have severed ties
with the Klan). The Republicans kicked Duke out of the Party, the
Democrats never kicked Byrd out - indeed, they consider him an
outstanding representative of their party.
