Cops allowed to check status, report some to feds

The New York Times is reporting that police in Phoenix, Arizona, will now be
allowed to ask those they arrest about their immigration status, as well as to
alert federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents about those they
suspect to be illegal aliens.

As unbelievable as it may seem, local police in many cities in the United
States are not allowed to ask about immigration status, under pressure from
special interest groups who threaten lawsuits about "racial profiling."
Phoenix, whose Hispanic population now stands at an astonishing 34%, has had a
policy banning such questions in place for a decade, but rampant and rising
immigrant crime is forcing a change. In announcing the new guidelines, Phoenix
Mayor Phil Gordon said "We are doing what every city in this country should be
doing but doesn't."

The change in Phoenix police policy is seen as part of a growing wave of
initiatives on local and state levels meant to tackle the illegal alien crisis
in the face of federal inaction. Arizona passed a state law, upheld in the
face of multiple lawsuits, penalizing employers of illegal aliens, and similar
laws have been passed in other states, most notably Oklahoma. Municipalities
like Hazleton, Pennsylvania, have also enacted various measures, with mixed
success. However, both Oklahoma and Arizona have seen their illegal immigrant
populations plummet in the face of the tough new laws.

In Los Angeles, whose illegal immigrant population is out of control, police
have been coerced into following a policy against finding out immigration
status of suspects. However, people are fighting back. Opponents of illegal
immigration sued the Los Angeles Police Department on behalf of unidentified
police officers afraid of losing their jobs. The suit argued that the policy
banning cops from asking about immigration status, and supported by Aztlanista
radical Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, allowed illegal aliens to commit multiple
crimes and avoid deportation when arrested.
