By the time Hillary began her Senate quest, Hillaryland had become a code
word for discipline and devotion to its matriarch. Her devotees described
"the cult around her" as rivaling a previous dynasty. "I haven't seen this
kind of loyalty to Hillary since the loyalty shown to Bobby Kennedy," said a
longtime Democrat who is very fond of Hillary. But Hillaryland's power and
reach eclipsed the empire built by the Kennedy clan. Today, no active
political organization can match its depth, discipline, or devotion,
according to Senate aides and political analysts. And in many ways, the
loyalty and secrecy that surround Hillary mirror the disciplined and
secretive network built by President Bush, her political demon.

"Hillaryland is culturally closer to Bushworld than to Bill Clinton-land,"
one Senate adviser observed. "It is more principled, more focused. There is
more discretion." Continued the adviser, "The closer you are [to Hillary]
the more loyalty there is to create and maintain that culture. If you are
disloyal or indiscreet, there will be a price for that disloyalty. There is
a fear of retribution that permeates the group." Another longtime friend of
the First Lady begged off talking about Hillaryland, saying half-kiddingly,
"She'll kill me if she catches me talking to you."
