The Tutor kings of England opened King's Schools. The idea was bright
students of any social class could go to the school. Some of the
lights of the system were William Harvey a farmer's son who discovered
how blood circulates, and Christopher Marlowe, a shoemaker's son who
became a great playright.

Yet today we are going in the opposite direction, moving toward
privatising schools, particularly universities, so that only the rich
can attend, no matter how much hay they have for brains (George Bush
with his Harvard MBA is a prime example).
