Disney blasted for challenging FCC fine

An official with the Parents Television Council says it's alarming that the
Walt Disney Company would appeal a fine ABC received for airing indecent
material on NYPD Blue.
The FCC recently proposed a $ million fine against Disney-owned ABC for
a 2003 episode of NYPD Blue which featured what the Parents Television
Council (PTC) called a graphic display of female nudity. Attorneys for the
network have since filed an appeal in federal court over the FCC fine,
describing it as "arbitrary and capricious."
PTC's Melissa Henson says the decision to appeal is not surprising. "It is
disappointing, given that ABC has a[n] ... association with what was once
considered a very family-friendly corporation -- the Disney Corporation,"
she laments. "It's disappointing that they've decided to defend indecency in
this way."
Henson says that ABC, along with other networks, has a clear agenda of
undermining the FCC's ability to fine indecent material. She also accuses
them of trying to do away with any decency standards during children's
viewing hours.
The fine, which was spread equally among 52 stations in the Central and
Mountain Time zones, amounted to $27,500 per station -- the maximum
allowable under FCC guidelines.
